HELP IT'S SO LONELY OVER HEAR!
Imagine landing in a new country and at the moment you step outside your plane the cold winter wind slaps you with a rude chill, as you breath in your lungs inhales the chilliness of the air and you breath out and it feels very different from whatever you have ever experienced, All signboards and inscriptions are in a language entirely different from English, faces all unfamiliar and everyone going about their business in a rush to get their luggage or join their next connecting flight. The fresh excitement of a new beginning quickly gives way to an overwhelming sense of loneliness.
Moving to Czechia
When i moved to Czech Republic for my studies , i was extremely excited for the new opportunities that faced me, but soon i was hit with my new reality, as it was actually the first time to be entirely this far away from family and friends because back home i was always in the same city with at least one family member. The times I spent in my room were the loneliest as it didn't take long before I began feeling home sick.
Navigating life
Simple things like knowing how to fully pronounce my full address, navigating the city as I got lost so many times, grocery shopping, translating languages or asking questions really seemed tough, as these things contributed to the isolation I faced. Cultural differences didn't make it easy to connect too as it was my first time being in Europe and everything seemed so much.
Join a group
One trusted way to combat loneliness is by joining groups or Forums that share your interest and value, For me the Church was my go-to, immediately I arrived I located an English speaking Catholic church closest to me and also joined the youth association which became of immense support to me emotionally and also they helped build my social circle as often times we went for karaoke, pub hangout and lunch after church.
Understand the Culture
If you find yourself in a country with a different language from yours, I suggest you start learning some basics like “Hello” or “Thank you” as they can go a long way in breaking the ice with your neighbors and making you feel more balanced into your new society. Understanding the culture will help you navigate social interactions more effectively as a simple “ tea or coffee invitation ” might come across as a friendly gesture or make you seem too forward.
Communication
Constantly communicating with family, friends and Joining online groups where you can connect with people who share the same experience with you can go a long way in offering advice and helps you connect with new friends who understand what you are going through.
For me i also joined a Nigerian cultural forum here which really helped in my integration into
the Czech system as well.
